Your Child's Comfort: Sedation and Oral Surgery

Though Jordan Landing Pediatric Dentistry works hard to provide a comfortable and relaxing atmosphere for your child, sometimes a treatment or a patient requires additional measures. When patients are especially young, anxious or simply undergoing a major procedure, our pediatric dentist may recommend a form of sedation.

Nitrous Oxide

Also known as “laughing gas,” this treatment keeps your child awake but relaxed throughout their treatment. The gas is safe and easy to administer, and takes effect and wears off quickly.

Oral Conscious Sedation

Our office also may recommend a form of oral conscious sedation for young patients, patients with specials needs or those undergoing pediatric oral surgery in West Jordan, Utah. This sedation is ingested through the mouth and is often used on young or fearful patients.

General Anesthesia

General anesthesia is a heavier form of sedation that renders the patient unconscious. (It is especially important when your child is undergoing oral surgery.) Dr. Ryan Johansen works with our anesthesiologist, Dr. David Gutzman, to help ensure your child is safe throughout their treatment. Dr. Gutzman has been providing anesthesiology for dental patients for over 28 years and will stay with your child throughout their procedure.

IV Sedation

For some surgical procedures, our anesthesiologist may induce IV sedation. This will be administered through the bloodstream putting your child to sleep, where Dr. Gutzman can carefully monitor their vitals and breathing patterns.
